Lilli: Review from Zero Film Festival (English and Italian)

All around excellence. Exceptional cinema...one of the few pieces we recieved in which the story is told through the image and the action and not the dialogue. The main actor was exceptional. He is able to draw both sympathy and empathy from the viewer in his protrayal of this lovable man-child, abused and belittled by his mother, a captive of this surrounding. Both his acting and films' overall pacing and restraint paint a meditational portait of his dreary day to day in this Italian country-side which fades into a location close to what would seem the middle of nowhere (emotionally). Daring and wise use of long shots as well as extended (duration) shots...these are really what set the moods and tedium leading up to his decision to escape. Great yet simple metaphor (as i read it) the boy as pet to his mother, the dog as pet to the boy, to set the stage of hierarchy. Good use of music...and good job on not overusing the music...not holding the viewer's hand in how they should feel, knowing that your actors always managed on their own. Heartbreaking and heartwarming. I cried a little.

Eccellenza su tutta la linea. Uno dei pochi film da noi ricevuti dove la storia è raccontata attraverso le immagini e l’azione e non con i dialoghi. L’attore principale è straordinario. E’ capace di attirare su di sé sia affetto sia empatia nella caratterizzazione di questo adorabile uomo-bambino, abusato e sminuito dalla madre, prigioniero di ciò che gli sta intorno. La recitazione ed il ritmo del film soprattutto- il suo tempo musicale e la sua misura- dipingono un meditativo ritratto della sua monotona quotidianità in questa oscura zona d’Italia che diviene, o almeno assomiglia, al bel mezzo del nulla (emotivamente). L’audace e saggio uso del campi lunghi così come la durata delle inquadrature riescono realmente a far sentire l’umore e la noia che conducono Giancarlo alla decisione di fuggire. Grande eppure semplice metafora (come l’ho letta io): il ragazzo come il “pet” per la madre, il cane come il “pet” del ragazzo. Buon uso della musica, calibrata e mai eccessiva. Non sottolinea forzatamente i momenti drammatici, ma ha vita a sé, sapendo che l’attore sempre sarà con gli spettatori senza bisogno d’altro. Straziante e toccante. Ho pianto un poco.
